Nigeria Launches Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System

A new GIS-based address system aims to make deliveries and emergency response more precise across Nigeria. Here is what the launch means — and what remains to be seen.

Nigeria has launched a National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System intended to give buildings and structures more precise digital addresses. The initiative, unveiled by the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy alongside the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), shifts beyond the country’s legacy six-digit postcode format.

According to The Guardian’s report on the launch, the new system uses geographic information system (GIS) technology to identify locations. The government says more precise addresses could support deliveries, emergency response, urban planning and access to services.

Why precise addresses matter

An address is more than a label for a parcel. For a delivery company it helps identify the right doorstep; for an ambulance it can cut the time spent searching for a patient. For businesses serving customers online, a reliable location reference can also make fulfillment less dependent on phone directions and landmarks.

Communications minister Bosun Tijani framed the initiative around inclusion, saying every Nigerian deserves to be found and every business deserves a chance to reach customers. The practical value will depend on how readily residents, delivery services and emergency responders can obtain and use the new codes.

What happens next

The announcement describes the system’s aims and underlying mapping approach, but does not by itself establish when every address will be usable across all delivery and emergency networks. Residents and businesses should look for official NIPOST guidance on retrieving and verifying their digital postcode rather than assuming existing address details have already changed.

The development comes as Nigeria’s communications regulators also announced a separate initiative for zero-rated access to approved educational platforms. Both programmes highlight an ongoing focus on digital access, though the postcode rollout has its own implementation challenges.
